Would you like to straighten your teeth but don't want to wear metal or ceramic braces? Invisalign offers a more subtle yet equally effective treatment option. Your Franklin, WI, dentist, Dr. John Olsen of Franklin Dental, can help you decide if Invisalign is right for you.

How does Invisalign work?

Both traditional braces and Invisalign use constant pressure to gradually realign teeth. Wires and brackets apply pressure to the teeth when you wear metal or ceramic braces, while clear, removable aligner trays accomplish the same purpose in the Invisalign system.

Your aligner trays are designed using a 3D digital image of your teeth. The image can be manipulated to show how your smile will change over the course of your treatment. Once your Franklin dentist is satisfied with the results shown on the screen, he'll order a series of aligner trays for you.

Aligner trays fit snugly over your upper and lower teeth and slowly change the position of your teeth. You'll wear each tray for about 22 hours per day and will begin using the next trays in the series after two weeks.

Treatment times are the same for metal or braces and Invisalign if you're a teen. Some adults may only have to wear Invisalign aligner trays for six to 12 months to accomplish their straightening goals.

Do I need adjustments with Invisalign?

Frequent adjustments are a must if you wear metal or ceramic braces but aren't needed with Invisalign. Although you will need to see the dentist occasionally to ensure that your treatment is progressing as expected, you'll need fewer follow-up visits.

What benefits does Invisalign offer?

Invisalign advantages include:

  • No Change to Your Appearance: Your wires and brackets are exposed every time you smile, speak or laugh if you wear metal braces. Invisalign aligners are practically transparent and don't distract from your appearance.
  • Improved Comfort: You won't have to worry about cuts to your mouth from stray wires or deal with the mild pain that can occur after adjustments. Aligner trays are made of smooth plastic for your comfort.
  • Easy Oral Hygiene: Brushing and flossing your teeth becomes much more difficult when you wear traditional braces. Fortunately, you won't have to change your oral hygiene routine when you choose Invisalign. After you remove your trays, you'll brush and floss the same way you usually do.
  • No Food Restrictions: Gum, sticky candy and hard foods aren't off limits with Invisalign. In fact, you can eat anything you want. You'll remove your aligner trays before consuming foods or beverages other than water.
