Clear BracesAre you considering orthodontic treatment but aren't sure if clear braces or Invisalign is the best option? Although both systems are designed to be unobtrusive, they do have a few important differences. Franklin, WI, dentist Dr. John Olsen of Franklin Dental offers clear braces and Invisalign to patients with crooked teeth or bite problems.

What are clear braces and Invisalign?

Clear braces (also called ceramic braces) use the same wire and bracket method as metal braces. Brackets are clear or tooth-colored too make them less noticeable. Metal or white wires can be threated through the brackets. Clear or white rubber bands are also used.

Invisalign completely eliminates wires and brackets. The system uses clear, removable aligner trays placed over the upper and lower teeth instead.

What are the differences between the two treatments?

Before you choose an orthodontic treatment, you may want to consider:

  • Appearance: Although clear braces are much less noticeable than metal braces, people will be able to see them. Invisalign aligners are transparent and molded to fit your teeth snugly, making them almost invisible.
  • Adjustments: Both methods exert constant pressure needed to realign your teeth. Pressure is changed by periodically adjusting the wires in your Franklin dentist's office if you wear clear braces. If you choose Invisalign, you'll receive a series of aligner trays. Each set in the series is designed to gradually change the alignment of your teeth, eliminating the need for adjustments. Sets are worn for about two weeks before they're replaced with the next set in the series.
  • Convenience: Clear braces are attached to your teeth with dental cement and must remain on your teeth during your entire treatment period. You'll need to avoid eating hard or sticky foods and must carefully clean around the wires and brackets when you brush and floss. Invisalign aligners are removed when you eat, brush and floss and don't require any changes to your usual routine and diet. They can also be removed for a few hours if you're playing sports or attending a special event.
  • Effectiveness: Both clear braces and Invisalign are a good choice if you have mild to moderate bite issues. Although Invisalign is a good choice for many people, it won't be recommended if your issues are severe. Clear braces can treat certain complicated problems, although very complex issues may require metal braces.
